After five years of efforts, the Natural Stone Council of the United States released a new standard entitled "Sustainable Production of Cuttable Natural Stone" (ANSI/NSC-373) to stone miners, producers and sellers in the United States and the world.
Standards are developed by the American National Standards Institute. The purpose of these standards is to document and improve the sustainability process for the production of processed natural stone.
1. The specific purpose of this standard is to promote the sustainable production of natural stone industry; Through multi stakeholders, a set of indicators with precise definitions of environment, ecology, social responsibility and human health has been established based on the scientific method recognized by the Green Building Materials Movement as the performance indicator of sustainable development; It provides an important opportunity for the major members, end-users, governments and environmental protection organizations in the design and construction industry in the production field of natural stone products; The four grade rating system (copper, silver, gold and platinum) is adopted to create a natural stone company mechanism that is committed to sustainable operation and continuous innovation and becomes an advanced environmental protection enterprise.
2. Applicable scope of the standard: applicable to all relevant processing personnel from mining to final stone processing producers, and enable natural stone producers to participate in the domestic market as well as the international market.
This standard on sustainable production of natural stone has two annexes, namely regulatory standards and compliance guidelines.
The chain of custody standard defines some rules, while the consistency guide provides guidance on how to understand the standard, and introduces the consistency of standards for mines and processing plants in seeking certification in a comprehensive way as possible through some specific examples, and also provides useful information for third parties to participate in the consistency inspection.

Specifically, this standard relates to the standard that the life cycle of natural stone products is not limited to the impact on society, environment and human health during the life cycle of mining, processing and production. Since stone is mined in various countries, the standard applies to both North America and international mines and mining units, and takes into account the logistics and transportation problems in the standard formulation process. The standards will help determine whether natural stone products are produced and transported in an environmentally sound manner consistent with the principles of sustainable development.
The standard focuses on the basic stone products and business in North America, but it is formulated with the participation and cooperation of international stone groups, and expands it into the basis of international standard ISO certification.
