Marble, in English, is a kind of natural rock, which has been used by human beings for carving and architectural decoration since ancient times. Marble originally refers to the white limestone with black patterns produced in Dali, Yunnan. In ancient times, marble with shaped patterns was often used to make screen or mosaic. Later, the name of marble gradually developed into all kinds of limestone with various colors and patterns used as building decoration materials. However, white marble, which is also known as marble for translating western sculpture, is generally called white marble.
Marble is a metamorphic rock formed by the original rocks (limestone or dolomite) in the crust under the action of high temperature and pressure in the crust. The internal force of the crust causes the original rocks to undergo qualitative changes, resulting in recrystallization. The qualitative change refers to the change of the original rock structure, structure and mineral composition. The new rock type formed by the qualitative change is called metamorphic rock. Marble is mainly composed of calcite, limestone, serpentine and dolomite. Its main component is calcium carbonate, accounting for more than 50%. Other components include magnesium carbonate, calcium oxide, manganese oxide and silicon dioxide. Marble will react with hydrochloric acid to produce carbon dioxide. Compared with granite, marble is generally soft.
