Stone science popularization: the largest stone in the world

Australia, a country occupying an exclusive continent, not only has many unique rare animals and plants, but also has its own characteristics in the natural environment. Ayers Rock (also known as Uluru or Uluru) in Australia is the largest overall rock in the world, 348 meters high, 3 kilometers long, with a circumference of 9.4 kilometers, high in the east and wide in the west. Uluru rocks are majestic, like a natural monument that transcends time and space, standing out on the vast wilderness and emitting charming brilliance in the dazzling sunlight.

Uluru Katachuta National Park, the location of Uluru Rock, is a world cultural and natural heritage recognized by UNESCO. It was listed as a world heritage for the first time in 1987 and a cultural heritage again in 1994. The indigenous people living in the area are the Anan Ancients, which is one of the oldest ethnic groups in the world.

The most famous attraction in Uluru Katachuta National Park is Uluru (Ayers Rock). What people can see is only the part of Uluru exposed to the earth's surface, which is only a small part of its entire volume. The larger part is hidden under the earth's surface, about 6 kilometers deep. Uluru, a huge red stone, has stood for hundreds of millions of years in the desert area in the center of the red soil, and has experienced ups and downs hundreds of millions of years ago.

It is observed that Uluru will show different colors in different seasons and climate conditions. Even at different times of the day, Uluru will change with the light at any time.

So, how did this huge stone come into being? Now scientists do not have a unified view. There are mainly two views: the geological movement view and the meteorite view.

1. Theory of geological movement

About 450 million years ago, due to the crustal movement, the Amadis Basin where Uluru Giant Stone is located pushed upward to form a large rock mass. Due to the uplift and overlapping of the blocks, the giant rock was in a vertical state.

Then about 300 million years ago, the crustal movement pushed this huge rock mountain out of the sea. After hundreds of millions of years of weathering, the surrounding sandstone has weathered and disintegrated. Only this huge stone, with its unique hardness, has withstood wind and rain erosion, and there are no cracks and fractures as a whole, becoming what is known as "residual stone" in geomorphology.

2. Meteorite theory

Some scientists also believe that the Uluru rock was caused by an asteroid that was close to the Earth's orbit and fell into the atmosphere hundreds of millions of years ago. Two thirds of the rock is buried underground and one third is exposed to the ground. Today's Ayers Rock is formed through geological changes such as uplift and weathering.
