In the first half of 2015, some media overemphasized the radioactive hazards of stone materials, causing panic among consumers who did not know the truth, which also led to various wars of words. The so-called radioactive abandonment of the choice of stone as a decorative material has seriously hindered the development of the stone industry and disrupted the rational choice of stone when people advocate green and environmental protection in today's society. In view of this, the National Stone Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (Guangdong) (hereinafter referred to as the "National Stone Quality Inspection Center") reminds consumers to treat stones scientifically, use stone products rationally, and make explanations based on scientific theories to help and guide consumers to correctly understand and objectively evaluate the radioactivity of stones.

Modern science has proved that all inorganic non-metallic materials contain radioactivity on the earth on which human beings depend. Stone is taken from nature and contains radioactive substances, which is a natural phenomenon. After testing, the radioactivity level of most stones is very low, which can be safely used. We should treat the radioactivity of stones scientifically with a common mind, without making a fuss. Radioactivity refers to a special kind of radiation emitted by radium, thorium, potassium and other radioactive elements in the process of decay, which generates radiation. The National Stone Quality Inspection Center has tested the radionuclide limits of more than 2000 batches of marble and 1700 batches of granite from 2011 to 2014 according to China's mandatory standard Limits for Radionuclides in Building Materials (GB6566-2010). Statistics show that the radioactivity of all marble products belongs to Class A of decoration materials, and the internal and external exposure indexes are within 0.3; More than 90% of the granite products are classified as Class A, and only a few of them are classified as Class B or Class C. Science shows that radioactive substances have no effect on human body as long as the radiation dose does not exceed the national standard.
According to the national mandatory standard Limits for Radionuclides in Building Materials (GB 6566), the radioactivity level of natural stone is divided into three categories: A, B and C, but the scope of use is different: the production, marketing and use scope of Class A stone are not restricted; Class B cannot be used for the interior decoration of Class I civil buildings in residences, hospitals and schools, but can be used for the exterior decoration of Class I civil buildings and the interior and exterior decoration of all other buildings; Class C can be used for exterior decoration of buildings and other outdoor purposes.
Since January 1, 2009, the state has cancelled the radioactive customs clearance inspection of imported and exported marble and its products. The stone materials exempted from inspection include marble, limestone, travertine, sandstone, etc; On June 12, 2010, the National Stone Quality Inspection Center, the National Stone Standardization Technical Committee and the China Stone Industry Association jointly issued the Notice on Marble's No Radioactive Hazard to Human Body and No Radionuclide Limit Test Needed; In China's current marble product standards Natural Marble Block (JC/T 202-2011) and Natural Marble Building Slabs (GB/T 19,766-2005), there is no requirement for mandatory detection of radioactivity of marble products, indicating that there is no need for mandatory detection, and there is no radioactive problem affecting human health. On December 10, 2013, the China Stone Association held a press conference on the White Paper on Chinese Natural Marbles (2013) in Beijing, and solemnly declared to the whole society that "natural marble is harmless to human health and can be used safely".
According to the results of radioactive inspection conducted by the National Stone Quality Inspection Center on more than 100 kinds of domestic and imported marble samples commonly used in the market in the past 10 years, the average specific activity of radionuclides of all tested samples is 0.02, which is only one fifth of the national standard Class A index, and can be completely ignored.
A. Class B and C stones have a clear scope of application. When indoor and outdoor decoration is done, as long as consumers reasonably select the applicable category and standardize the operation, they can be used safely and confidently. It needs to be pointed out that if you use natural stone to decorate a room, you should not blame all indoor pollution on natural stone. In fact, radon emitted from ground soil is also one of the main sources of indoor radon concentration. Coatings and decoration materials of various chemicals used in indoor decoration will continuously release some harmful gases, especially formaldehyde and benzene, which are most harmful to human health; All kinds of household appliances (TV, refrigerator, computer, air conditioner, microwave oven, etc.) will also continuously emit a small amount of micro radiation, etc.
Therefore, in addition to carefully selecting healthy and safe home decoration materials, the most effective way to eliminate all indoor pollutants is to pay attention to ventilation and ensure a fresh home environment. To sum up, as long as the decorative stone is used correctly, it will not affect human health, but also beautify the living environment and add interest to life.
